What the X-Ray Sprite Does in Season 4

The X-Ray Sprite is one of four Sprites the v42.10 update added to the Chapter 7 Season 4 "Override" roster, and it carries a story only one other Sprite shares: it is one of the first two Design-A-Sprite community-contest winners to reach the game. Epic's contest drew more than 20,000 entries and picked five winners — X-Ray, Onigiri, Dumpster Dive, Honey and Pond — with X-Ray, designed by community creator Avila215, and Onigiri first out of the gate. It is also a Legendary, the second of the season after Jackrabbit.

The ability fits the name. Epic's patch notes sum it up in one line: "Periodically mark enemies in an area around you." Every so often X-Ray pings the players nearby, revealing where the players around you are. Leveling it up makes the marks fire more often and cover a larger radius, so a mastered X-Ray watches a far wider circle than a fresh one. Epic has not published the exact interval or radius, so no figures are listed here.

How to Get the X-Ray Sprite

X-Ray went live on Thursday, September 3, 2026 with the v42.10 update. Servers came down at 4 AM PT / 7 AM ET, and the new Sprites became obtainable from the 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET reset. It joined the regular Season 4 pool, not a limited-time event, so there is no deadline. Onigiri arrived in the same update, and the other three contest winners followed: Pond on September 17, Dumpster Dive on October 1 and Honey, the last of the five, on October 15.

The usual Season 4 rules apply. Sprites are found roaming the island, in chests, and from Cheat Code consoles. Since v42.20, Rare (blue) and Epic (purple) codes can drop Sprites of any rarity, Epic codes have much better odds of variants and higher-rarity Sprites, and Legendary (orange) codes guarantee a variant with an emphasis on higher rarities, so Epic and Legendary codes are the natural route to X-Ray. Its spawn area has not been listed yet, so the location field stays empty until it is confirmed. Extract it before the match ends or it does not count; a successful extraction adds X-Ray to your collection and Sprite Garden. Epic has not published drop rates for any Season 4 Sprite, X-Ray included, so its rate column stays honestly blank.

X-Ray Sprite Variants: Normal, Gold, Cheat Master, Loot Hacker and Bounty Hunter

All six forms of X-Ray are live: Normal, Gold and Cheat Master from September 3, Loot Hacker from September 10, Bounty Hunter from Thursday, September 24, and Trick or Treat from Thursday, October 8. Each is its own row on the checklist with the same marking ability. Gold X-Ray grants 3× bonus Sprite XP from eliminations, and it matters here — mark frequency and radius both grow with level, so faster XP means a wider, busier radar sooner. Cheat Master X-Ray wears the season's green code-rain look and makes every Cheat Code input count as correct.

The fourth form is the interesting one. Loot Hacker X-Ray arrived a week after the base Sprite, on the morning Epic announced that Hacker Sprite variants were "entering the loot pool." Loot Hacker is the third special form, new in v42.10; it increases the chances of items spawning from your Loot Hacks. The "Loot Hacker Sprite Variant" Loot Hack, from 500 Sprite Dust, adds random Loot Hacker Sprites to your chest drops, so you cannot target X-Ray specifically. Bounty Hunter X-Ray, the fifth form, turns up by chance when you eliminate opponents; it keeps the same marks, adds a chance to find Sprites when eliminating opponents, and gains Sprite XP only from eliminations. The free Sprite Checklist tracks each variant independently, and Loot Hacker and Bounty Hunter X-Ray both count toward your completion.

Is the X-Ray Sprite Worth Using?

Information is the one resource Fortnite never hands out for free, and X-Ray is the first Override Sprite that deals in it. Periodic enemy marks make third parties harder to spring on you, turn a blind push into a known one, and make clearing a building far less of a gamble. It pairs naturally with Jackrabbit's double jump for fast rotations onto marked players, and with Shadow's auto-reload for squads that fight the instant a mark appears.

The trade-off is that X-Ray does nothing for your survivability: Bush hides you, Jonesy heals you and Storm Scout gets you out of the zone, while X-Ray only tells you where the danger is. The marks are periodic, not constant, so you cannot count on a ping at the exact moment you need one. Still, a leveled X-Ray Sprite with a wide, frequent mark is a genuine competitive edge, and with mastered Sprites now costing half the Sprite Dust to resummon, mastering it pays off faster than before. Extract it when you see it, level it, and let the marks find the fights for you.

Trick or Treat Variant: Live

Trick or Treat X-Ray went live on October 8, 2026, a week after v42.30 added its icon, so all six forms are now live: Normal, Gold, Cheat Master, Loot Hacker, Bounty Hunter, and Trick or Treat. The checklist counts it toward your completion total. The Sprite directory has not published a separate Trick or Treat bonus yet, so treat the base ability as the only confirmed effect.
