The Onigiri Sprite is a Rare Sprite added to Chapter 7 Season 4 "Override" on September 3, 2026, and one of the first two Design-A-Sprite contest winners in the game. Its ability, in Epic's own words: "Applies Overdrive after eating or drinking a consumable item." Overdrive is the movement state Storm Scout also grants — faster sprint, higher jumps, better air control and unlimited Energy while it lasts. The difference is the trigger: Storm Scout needs 10 Storm damage; Onigiri fires whenever you use a healing or shield consumable or eat foraged food.
The scaling line matters just as much: "Overdrive lasts longer with each Level Up!" Epic has not published how long a burst runs at any level, but the design is clear — the higher Onigiri levels, the more movement every heal buys. That turns a routine action into a rotation tool: healing after a fight, topping off shields before a push, even grabbing fruit on the way to the next circle. An onigiri is a Japanese rice ball, so a food-fueled ability suits the design neatly.
How to Get the Onigiri Sprite
Onigiri became obtainable on Thursday, September 3, 2026, with the v42.10 update — servers went down at 4 AM PT / 7 AM ET, the new Sprites were live from the 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET reset, and the listing was verified live that morning. It is a permanent Season 4 addition, not a limited-time drop. Sprites roam the island, come out of chests and drop from Cheat Code consoles, where Rare (blue) and Epic (purple) codes can drop Sprites of any rarity since v42.20, Epic codes have much better odds of variants and higher-rarity Sprites, and Legendary (orange) codes guarantee a variant.
One honest gap: no spawn location has been listed for Onigiri yet, so there is no confirmed biome or named spot to farm. Until that changes, roam widely, open chests and punch every Cheat Code you find into the consoles you pass. As always, extract it before the match ends or it does not count; a successful extraction adds Onigiri to your Sprite Garden permanently. Drop rates remain unpublished for every Season 4 Sprite, Onigiri included, so the free Sprite Checklist shows a verified empty state instead of a guess.
Onigiri Sprite Variants: Normal, Gold, Cheat Master, Loot Hacker and Bounty Hunter
Six forms are live: Normal, Gold and Cheat Master Onigiri since September 3, Loot Hacker Onigiri since September 10, Bounty Hunter Onigiri since Thursday, September 24 and Trick or Treat Onigiri since Thursday, October 8, each its own checklist row with the identical consumable-triggered Overdrive. Gold Onigiri grants 3× bonus Sprite XP from eliminations, a strong pairing, since a higher level means longer Overdrive per heal. Cheat Master Onigiri wears the season's green code-rain look and makes every Cheat Code input count as correct — the form to hunt whenever Power Hours boost Cheat Master Sprites, as they did on September 5.
The fourth form is the interesting one. Loot Hacker is the third special form, introduced in v42.10, and it increases the chances of items spawning from your Loot Hacks. When Loot Hacker Onigiri went live, Epic's announcement said Hacker Sprite variants were "entering the loot pool." The "Loot Hacker Sprite Variant" Loot Hack, from 500 Sprite Dust, adds random Loot Hacker Sprites to your chest drops, though it cannot be set to Onigiri specifically. The free Sprite Checklist tracks released rows only, so Loot Hacker Onigiri now counts toward your completion. The fifth form, Bounty Hunter Onigiri, counts too. Epic says Bounty Hunter Sprites have a chance to appear when you eliminate opponents, and the form's bonus is a chance to find Sprites when eliminating opponents, with Sprite XP coming only from eliminations.
Is the Onigiri Sprite Worth Using?
Compared with Storm Scout, Onigiri is the far easier Overdrive trigger. Healing and shielding up is part of nearly every match, so the ability fires on habits you already have, while Storm Scout only pays out in the Storm. Klombo, the Mythic that levels only by using healing and shield consumables, rewards the same routine, so Onigiri slots into a rhythm many players already run. The September 5 Power Hours showed why: everyone dropped in with a full stack of consumables — Onigiri's exact fuel.
The trade-off is the one every conditional Sprite carries: with no consumables in your inventory, the Onigiri Sprite does nothing, while Bush hides you and Jonesy heals you regardless. The v42.10 changes help, though — mastered Sprites now cost half the Sprite Dust to resummon, a new Sprite Mastery reward track was added, and Mastery Mondays have been back since September 7. A Sprite that levels through normal healing is well placed to ride that track — extract it, level it, and let every heal move you.
Trick or Treat Variant: Live
Trick or Treat Onigiri went live on October 8, 2026, a week after v42.30 added its icon, so all six forms are now live: Normal, Gold, Cheat Master, Loot Hacker, Bounty Hunter, and Trick or Treat. The checklist counts it toward your completion total. The Sprite directory has not published a separate Trick or Treat bonus yet, so treat the base ability as the only confirmed effect.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Onigiri Sprite do in Fortnite?

X-Ray arrived with it, Pond followed on September 17, Dumpster Dive on October 1 and Honey on October 15.
