Birthday Sprite in Fortnite — How to Get It, Ability and Variants

What the Birthday Sprite Does

The Birthday Sprite is a Rare Sprite in Chapter 7 Season 4 "Override". Epic announced it in the v42.20 update notes on September 17, 2026, and it went live on Saturday, September 26 at 11 AM PT / 2 PM ET with all five of its forms at once. Epic describes it this way: "Chests have a chance to serve up slices of cake when opened - at max Sprite Level, elims can too!" The in-game directory text adds the scaling: opening chests has a chance to spawn a piece of cake, eliminations can spawn cake at max level, and the chance to spawn cake goes up with each Level Up.

Epic has not published the spawn chance at any level or exactly what a slice of cake restores, so no figures are listed here. The design is still easy to read. Birthday rewards players who loot a lot, since every chest you open is another roll, and at max level it adds a reward for winning fights. It is a Rare Sprite, in the same tier as Bush, Jonesy and Onigiri.

How to Get the Birthday Sprite

Birthday went live on Saturday, September 26, 2026, the date Epic's v42.20 notes gave ("available starting Saturday, September 26"), at 11 AM PT / 2 PM ET, the start of Epic's Birthday Power Hours for Battle Royale's ninth birthday. Epic's event post put it simply: "Birthday Sprite is here - equip one and find cake slices in Chests or from elims at max Level." The same Power Hours had everyone drop in with Presents, put the Exotic Balloon Popper Assault Rifle in the wild and let 1-Up Tokens and Portable Extractors drop from Chests, with a second round at 9 PM ET. We verified all five Birthday forms in the fortnite.gg Sprite directory the same day. The Sprite had been in the game files since v42.20 on September 17 but could not be obtained until then. Like Storm Scout, which arrived with Sonic Power Hours on August 29, it launched on a Saturday rather than at a Thursday update, and the patch number is still v42.20.

The directory lists its location as "Spotted near high and mountainous areas," the same area given for most of the launch roster. You can also get it from chests and Cheat Codes. As of v42.20, Sprites of any rarity can drop from any Rare (blue) or Epic (purple) Cheat Code, Epic codes have much better odds of variants and higher rarities, and Legendary (orange) codes are guaranteed to drop a variant Sprite. Epic has not published drop rates for any Season 4 Sprite, so Birthday's rate column stays blank until real numbers exist. As with every Sprite, extract it before the match ends or it does not count.

Birthday Sprite Variants: Normal, Gold, Cheat Master, Loot Hacker and Bounty Hunter

Like Morgana two days earlier, Birthday went live with all five forms on day one: Normal, Gold, Cheat Master, Loot Hacker and Bounty Hunter. Each is its own row on the checklist with the same cake ability. Gold Birthday grants 3× bonus Sprite XP from eliminations, which speeds up the climb to max level, where eliminations start spawning cake too. Cheat Master Birthday makes every Cheat Code input count as correct. Loot Hacker Birthday increases the chances of items spawning from your Loot Hacks, and the "Loot Hacker Sprite Variant" Loot Hack, from 500 Sprite Dust, adds random Loot Hacker Sprites to your chest drops, though you cannot pick Birthday.

Bounty Hunter Birthday was the last Bounty Hunter row of the v42.20 line to go live. In Epic's words, Bounty Hunter Sprites "have a chance to appear when you eliminate opponents, leveling up only from eliminations." That makes this form a slower build for a chest-driven Sprite: it keeps the same cake ability but only levels up as you rack up eliminations. The free Sprite Checklist tracks all six Birthday rows separately: the first five have counted toward your Season 4 completion since September 26, and Trick or Treat Birthday since October 8.

Is the Birthday Sprite Worth Using?

Birthday pays out per chest, so it suits a loot-heavy route: land where chests are dense and open everything on the way to the circle. The fair comparison inside the Rare tier is Adventure, which upgrades a random item in your inventory with each level, and Jonesy, which recovers some Health or Shield a short time after you take damage. Both work without any extra effort, while Birthday only pays off if you keep opening chests. A leveled Birthday also rewards eliminations, so the Gold form, with its bonus XP from eliminations, is the natural one to level first.

The trade-off is the one every conditional Sprite carries: a match with few chests gives Birthday little to work with, and a fresh one rolls cake less often than a leveled one. If you already loot every chest you pass, extract Birthday when you see it, level it, and let the chests keep paying out. Trick or Treat Variant: Live

Trick or Treat Birthday went live on October 8, 2026, a week after v42.30 added its icon, so all six forms are now live: Normal, Gold, Cheat Master, Loot Hacker, Bounty Hunter, and Trick or Treat. The checklist counts it toward your completion total. The Sprite directory has not published a separate Trick or Treat bonus yet, so treat the base ability as the only confirmed effect.
